The borderland city of El Paso is a combination of the cultures of both Mexico and the USA. This dual culture has resulted in a diverse and unique art scene. Here are our top spots to discover local art within the city.

1. EP Museum of Art

Founded in 1959, the EPMA has become one of the most important cultural establishments in the area. The museum's contemporary collection focuses on artists from Texas, the US, the Mexico border region, and the Southwest of America. Among the work of many local artists, featured in the collection is James Drake's 1989 sculpture, Cinco de Mayo, and Gaspar Enriquez's multi-part painting, Generations of Attitudes. Other local artists represented at the museum are Carmen Lomas Garza, Sam Gilliam, and Al Souza.

2. Galleries at the Memorial

The Chamizal National Memorial commemorates the peaceful setting of the border dispute between the US and Mexico and celebrates the history and culture of the region. The site is home to three galleries that showcase the work of local artists such as Julio Sanchez de Alba and Nestor Valencia. The founders of the site understood that art can be used to share cultures and promote a better understanding between neighbors. The work shown within the galleries reflects both the history and landscape of the region.

3. Hal Marcus Gallery

The Hal Marcus Gallery, located between UTEP and Downtown, features over 2000 pieces of art. Born in the city, Hal Marcus has been painting for over 40 years and set up the gallery in 1995. The gallery features some of Hal's own work, along with celebrated local artists including Manual Acosta, Bill Rakocy, and Eugene Thurston. Hal Marcus has worked closely in developing and promoting the city's art scene; he was a co-founder of the Early EP Art Collectors Organisation, held a spot on the advisory board of the EPMA, and was inducted into the EP Artist Hall of Fame. His work can also be seen in the City Hall and Chamizal National Memorial.

4. Agave Rosa

The Agave Rosa gallery was founded in 2011 by local artist Martha Arzabala with the goal of providing a home to new, local artists. The gallery focuses on Hispanic artists and displays work by both emerging and established artists from EP, Las Cruces, and Ciudad Juarez. Displays include paintings, ceramics, photography, sculptures, and jewelry.

5. Upper Valley Artist and Farmers Market

The Upper Valley Artist and Farmers Market is held every Sunday, the first two Sundays of the month at Mesa Plaza and at The Substation on the last two. Browse the eclectic offerings from local artists, crafters, and creators; grab a bite to eat at one of the food vendors or listen to local musicians performing live. The market features a range of art for sale, including paintings, photography, jewelry, clothing, and homeware.

6. The Rock House Café and Gallery

This humble café displays pieces from local artists across its walls, with each month bringing new art. They also host a small art market at weekends and host poetry slams and live music. The city is packed with art, from museums and galleries to street art and market vendors. Check websites to ensure availability, then get out and enjoy the sights and sounds today!
